Print to OneNote Fails

Some users have reported trying to print to OneNote - especially printing PDF fies - and receiving this error message:

Microsoft OneNote: The file you have selected cannot be inserted as a Printout. There may be a problem with the file, or you may not have the right program installed. You must first install a program that can open and print this file type, and then try again.

In the event you get that message too, try reassociating the file extension of the document type to its program.  For example: right-click a PDF file, choose Open With and select Acrobat Reader as the program to open the PDF file with.  Make sure and check the box to have that type of file always opened by that program.

Same principal holds for other types of programs.  Whether it's a Word document, Excel spreadsheet or whatever.  Right-click it and set the "Open With" to be the proper program.

No OneNote Printer?

If you don't see the OneNote printer option then there are a couple of possibilities.

1. If you're running Windows XP it's possible that you don't have .NET Framework 3.5 (or later) installed on your machine. You can download and install it for free from Microsoft's web site.  Click Here.

2. You may just need to do a repair install of Office. Here's an article that explains how to do that.

OneNote Can't Find a Page on Which To Insert Your Printout?

In OneNote go to File | Options (or Tools | Options for versions older than 2010) | Send to OneNote and make sure that it's set to print to the correct OneNote notebook -OR- that it's set to "Always Ask" where you want to put it.
